WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?
Originating from the United States, Black Friday is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, which occurs on the fourth Thursday of November each year. Thanksgiving is an important and much-celebrated holiday in America, and following this festive mood marks a frenzied weekend of sales, starting with Black Friday and ending on Cyber Monday. For at least one out of the four days, retailers will offer fabulous sales you probably will only see once a year, attracting shoppers to go all out to stock up on things they need and may not need, lustfully or half-heartedly want. It may seem silly or even astonishing to see pictures of shoppers in America rushing into stores and digging through piles and stacks of discounted products, but for many of them, it’s the best deals and discounts they fix their eyes and minds on once a year. Nothing else truly matters, not even if they have to start queuing outside stores on Thanksgiving night just so that they could have that few advantageous minutes ahead of the rest.
However, “Black Friday” was not always a term associated with huge discounts and amazing sales. One of the most well-known original story dating back to Black Friday was due to the crash in U.S. gold market back in September 1869. Two Wall Street financiers plotted to earn big profits from buying and selling the nation’s gold, only to have their plan discovered and thwarted by the government. Many people were left bankrupt that day and the dark term of “Black Friday” was born.
Another explanation for Black Friday stemmed from how retailers who didn’t perform well and were making losses (“in the red” in accounting books) performed exceptionally well on the day after Thanksgiving due to high consumer spending such that they earned profits (“went into the black”). Black meant profits for the retailers, and so with more media coverage and the thrive of e-commerce, retailers started ramping up their Black Friday sales efforts to make the best out of the hype.
WHAT IS CYBER MONDAY?
Originally coined to boost online sales, Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday following Black Friday. While Black Fridays typically offers bigger discounts on gadgets and tech items, Cyber Monday offers more deals on fashion and clothing. However, in Singapore, this just means AN ENTIRE WEEKEND of crazy shopping for us!
