🐭 With Chinese New Year 2020 just around the corner, it is time to start the preparations – spring cleaning, getting ready a new set of clothing, making a list of your favourite Chinese New Year goodies to buy or bake and more. If you are married or a newly-wed, the other task on your list would be to get ready to give out red packets or angbaos to the seniors, youngsters and little ones in the family and to the young singles and kids that you meet during the festive house visiting.

The amount packed is usually an even number and is dependent on how close you are to the recipient. The Chinese are usually big on 心意 (heartfelt) , so do give an amount that you are comfortable with instead of going all out to impress. It doesn’t need to be a huge amount as long as it is given meaningfully from the heart.

TIP: Use different red packet designs as an easy way for you to differentiate the different denominations that are packed into each red packet and bundle them separately.

So where do we get our hands on these red packets? Although one can easily buy them from stationery shop or online from Qoo10 or Lazada, why not get these CNY red packets free and save your money instead? 😁

Here’s our handpicked list of where you can get free red packets for Chinese New Year 2020!  But of course, do just get what you need to minimise waste and conserve resources. If you have leftover red packets from previous years, do try to reuse them or share them with your friends! Here we go:

1. Local Banks

Synonymous with red packets will be the crispy new money notes packed neatly inside each angbao. DBS/POSB, OCBC and UOB have started issuing new and good-as-new-notes from 9 January 2020. The respective banks’ red packets would also be available to their customers at the same time so do head down to your nearest bank to check it out!

To do their part for the environment, these local banks’ red packets are made of environmentally friendly paper derived from sustainable sources. If you do not know what to do with your used red packets after CNY, you can place them in recycling bins at all DBS/POSB and OCBC branches across Singapore from 28 January 2020. These bins are specially for recycling used red packets. Do remember to empty them out first!

DBS/POSB

If you are a DBS/POSB customer, you have the option of collecting and withdrawing your CNY notes at the pop-up ATMS located island-wide or at the respective DBS/POSB branches. Two sets of DBS/POSB red packets will be given out to each customer.

In previous years, the red packets for DBS have featured Xing and Jaan, the two children that we are all familar with, having received angbaos with their smiley faces over the years! This year, DBS and POSB has come together to have their red packets feature Xing, Jaan and POSB’s Smiley against a vibrant water colour floral motifs with a classy Chinese New Year greeting – “花开富贵”, which means blooming flowers bring prosperity.

UOB

For UOB customers, you can select the denomination of the notes that you need through your UOB Personal Internet Banking and collect them at your selected branch from 13 January 2020.

UOB’s “Mice & Cheese” inspired design is a creative play featuring eight playful mice having a grand feast inside a cheese block, symbolising abundance and joy. What never cease to amaze me about UOB’s stylish red packets is the auspicious dimension of the envelope: 168mm by 88mm!

OCBC

For OCBC customers, you can use Easy Q via OCBC Mobile Banking to check for the availability of new notes and take a digital queue ticket from the app before heading down to the bank. Check out the detailed instructions here.

OCBC red packets are available from customer service counters (while stocks last) at the bank or if you are changing new notes, you can opt for a Fortune pack that is a pre-packed bundle of new notes (100 pieces of S$2 notes and 30 pieces of S$10 notes, for a total value of S$500) and includes one pack of eight OCBC red packets.

This year, OCBC’s angbao packets are thoughtfully designed to relay a “Protect the Earth” message. The creative play of Earth related messages like 大地回春 (Earth is precious, let’s protect it), 喜从天降 (Clean air means good health, Let’s keep it clean) and 秀水风收 (Water is wealth, let’s use it wisely) are meaningful and paired with beautifully designed elements.

A symbol of happiness and good luck, red packets are traditionally, well, red and also known as 红包 (hong bao) but in recent years, as companies get more creative with their design of the red packets, it is now common to see a variety of colours – from gold, pink and even blue! Some red packets are beautifully designed and definitely worth keeping – especially if you are an angbao hoarder like me, who can’t resist a beautiful red envelope! But no matter the colour of the envelope or the amount inside, what remains is the well wishes and blessings given.

👍 Bear in mind to just get what you need to minimise waste and conserve resources. If you have leftover red packets from previous years – whether used or unused, do try to reuse them or share them with your friends!

Wishing you and your family much happiness, good health and prosperity this Chinese New Year! 🍊🍊
