With Chinese New Year 2022 just around the corner, it is time to start the preparations – spring cleaning, getting ready a new set of clothing, making a list of your favourite Chinese New Year goodies to buy or bake and more. If you are married or a newly-wed, the other task on your list would be to get ready to give out red packets or angbaos to the seniors, youngsters and little ones in the family and to the young singles and kids that you meet during the festive house visiting.
With the safety measures due to Covid-19, there is a cap of up to 5 unique persons for social gatherings and household visitors (source). Although we might not meet as many family and friends during this year’s annual visits, you can opt to give an e-hongbao via PayNow as advised by MAS this CNY or if you prefer to stick to the traditional ways, read on.
The amount packed is usually an even number and is dependent on how close you are to the recipient. The Chinese are usually big on 心意 (heartfelt) , so do give an amount that you are comfortable with instead of going all out to impress. It doesn’t need to be a huge amount as long as it is given meaningfully from the heart.
TIP: Use different red packet designs as an easy way for you to differentiate the different denominations that are packed into each red packet and bundle them separately.
So where do we get our hands on these red packets? Although one can easily buy them from stationery shop or online from Qoo10 or Lazada, why not get these CNY red packets free and save your money instead? 😁
Here’s our handpicked list of where you can get free red packets for Chinese New Year 2022! But of course, do just get what you need to minimise waste and conserve resources. If you have leftover red packets from previous years, do try to reuse them or share them with your friends!
Synonymous with red packets will be the crispy new money notes packed neatly inside each angbao. Although the banks have started issuing new and good-as-new-notes from January but the slots have been booked out really quickly! The respective banks’ red packets might also be available to their customers at the same time so do head down to your nearest bank to check it out!
If you do not know what to do with your used red packets after CNY, you can join in Geneco’s 2022 recycling efforts and place them in recycling bins at these locations islandwide. These bins are specially for recycling used red packets. Do remember to empty them out first!

Even better, sugarcane takes only a year to be produced, compared to trees which take 20 years, making it a much more sustainable process.”

A symbol of happiness and good luck, red packets are traditionally, well, red and also known as 红包 (hong bao) but in recent years, as companies get more creative with their design of the red packets, it is now common to see a variety of colours – from gold, pink and even blue! Some red packets are beautifully designed and definitely worth keeping – especially if you are an angbao hoarder like me, who can’t resist a beautiful red envelope! But no matter the colour of the envelope or the amount inside, what remains is the well wishes and blessings given.
👍 Bear in mind to just get what you need to minimise waste and conserve resources. If you have leftover red packets from previous years – whether used or unused, do try to reuse them or share them with your friends!
Wishing you and your family much happiness, good health and prosperity this Chinese New Year! 🍊🍊
